The Andy Poole Memorial Trophy

Wolverhampton Wheelers Severn Valley Road Race

This memorial trophy has a wealth of history behind it…. Andy was the son of Horace and Betty Poole, lifelong avid cyclists who also had two daughters who rode for the Wheelers. Horace himself was a superb racing cyclist having been National Junior Road Race and Time Trial Champion! As a family they were very, very close and the children enjoyed a wonderful upbringing all centred around cycling. However, tragedy struck when Andy, still in his early 30’s was killed in an avalanche whilst walking in the Alps. Andy had progressed to become a first category road man and was representing the Bilston Couriers C. C. at the time.

Horace donated this magnificent trophy that keeps the tradition of what was once a ‘Grand Prix’ event in Andy’s memory. Horace often presented the Trophy and would also make a donation to the first 3rd Category rider to finish – as he would be the first to say, you can’t have a winner without someone to ride against.
