WOLVERHAMPTON WHEELERS CYCLING CLUB
Welcome to the “Wheelers” one of the oldest and most successful cycling clubs in the Country
Wild Wales 2011
Well done to all those who completed a very demanding Wild Wales Challenge 2011.
77 miles of a multitude of climbs, many 20% (I in 5) and even 25% (1 in 4), although some of the 'Fast Lads' clocked 90 miles due to navigation errors, despite painted arrows in the road!
Typical Bank Holiday weather of sunshine and showers with a brisk wind meant that the Wheelers team had plenty to contend with including some treacherous descents....... One of which was 30% (nearly 1 in 3) which caught several riders out including three Wheelers, Ian Horton, Paul Hammond and more seriously Alan Hilleard who fell heavily on his left wrist.
Alan struggled into the lunch stop in Abergelle but it was obvious that his ride would go no further and a trip to the local hospital confirmed that it was broken in three places and may need surgery. This was a bitter blow for Alan who is left handed. However, he did however have some good news in that his daughter Georgia had won the a regional Gold medal in the Lichfield races.
So it was that the team moved into the last half of the ride without Alan and nursing a couple of riders carrying minor injuries from earlier spills. This included Kim Creamer who had also been the innocent victim of a serious car accident on the M6 a few days earlier. Kim was still suffering from whiplash injuries and despite spending the day pulling on the 'bars up steep hills and flying down slippery descents she came in still smiling having ridden really well.
In all over 30 Wheelers completed the ride which was more than enough to clinch the Harold Kerwish Team Trophy over the likes of Macclesfield and Port Sunlight Wheelers each with 20 + riders. This has stretched the Wheelers record number of Team wins to 8 over Macclesfield and Birkenhead North End each with 5.
WELL DONE TO ALL THE WHEELERS WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THIS SUCCESS.
And we all wish Alan a full and speedy recovery.
