‘Wheelers Donation to Special Olympics Funds’

Back in late February and early March the ‘Wheelers staged a series of three reliability rides, each covering 50 to 65 miles over challenging terrain. Each event attracted a good level of support with up to 80 riders covering a wide range of ages and abilities. The youngest were 12 years old and the oldest, well lets just say, that the left their bus passes at home for the day! The events are not a race, but set around a challenging course (including Ironbridge Gorge & Wenlock Edge) aimed to test the average club cyclist.

The Wheelers were supported by other local cycling & triathlon clubs and by individual riders, each paying a nominal entry fee. The proceeds of which are donated to a charity or deserving cause chosen by the WWCC committee.

This year it was unanimously agreed to support the ‘Wolverhampton Special Olympics’ to boost their funds and support their athletes in their forthcoming Championships in July.

Jackie Silvester, Chair of Wolverhampton Special Olympics said that this was an unexpected but most welcome and generous boost to their cause. Wolverhampton has played a very special part in this country’s cycling history and it also has a very strong Special Olympics Team covering a range of sports including Gymnastics, Swimming, Badminton & Table Tennis.

Jackie Silvester is pictured here receiving a Presentation Cheque for £600.00 from Alan Cooper – Chair of Wolverhampton Wheelers CC. Also pictured are:
