all.....
Sunday
dawned
frosty
and cold
but dry
with
clear
skys,
ideal
hill
climbing
weather!
A large
contingent
rode out
from
Aldersley
Stadium
at a
moderate
pace to
Ironbridge
and the
foot of
the
climb up
Bridge
road to
Broseley.
This
1,125
meter
climb
starts
off very
steeply
and is a
severe
test for
all,
even for
the
current
record
holder
Stuart
Dangerfield
who was
5 times
National
Champion!
Twenty
hardy
soles
took to
the
start
line
each one
minute
apart
and all
successfully
conquered
the hill
at
various
speeds.
The
youth
riders
(under
16
years)
rode
particularly
well
with
Richard
Walkerdine
coming
out on
top in
his last
race in
this
category
before
moving
up to
the
Junior
ranks
(16-18
yrs)
next
season.
At the
other
end of
the age
spectrum
John
Grayson
was
first
veteran
(40+
yrs) out
of eight
contenders.
This
event
bringing
back his
memories
of
hill races
in the
south of
England
over 20
years
ago!
Unusually
we had a
tie for
second
place
between
Dave
Starkey,
now a
second
category
road
rider
and Mark
Caley,
riding
his
first
ever
hill
climb.
Mark
will
obviously
be one
to watch
in
future,
especially
as he
felt he
could
have
gone
quicker
still!
But the
outright
winner
was Tom
Masters
with a
comfortable
6 second
margin
and
looking
very
smooth
at the
finish.
This
performance
underling
what
many of
his team
mates
already
knew
about
Tom's
climbing
ability
having
experienced
his
powerful
riding
in
training
and
racing
throughout
this
season.
A post
race
analysis
was
conducted
at the
Green
Woods
centre
over
cups of
coffee
before a
brisk
ride
home.
